Dear City Commissioners:
I am AGAINST adopting the pride flag as our city flag. What is the purpose of a flag? “Its
purpose is to serve as a symbol of shared identity and civic unity. A city flag should represent
the entire community-its people, history, geography, and collective values. It is meant to be a
timeless, nonpartisan emblem that flies over city buildings, appears on official documents,
and marks public property in a way that transcends political and cultural trends.”
Upon looking up the population of the LGBTQ+ community in Montana, I found that it is 3.6%
using the Census for total population and using “Data Pandas” for population of LGBTQ+.
Overall, a very small portion of the community identifies as LGBTQ+ and we are going to
change our city flag to represent that small portion? How is that inclusive? In my opinion, the
pride flag will be divisive. We need unity in our city and this flag will only promote division.
Thank you,
Debbie Nelson
