Dear City Commission:
Can we have a UDO that:
--allows for thoughtful infill, but does not encourage tearing down Naturally OccurringAffordable Housing (like the older, downtown apartments on Babcock slated for demolition)
or historic homes in favor of upscale and/or out-of-scale development?--promotes greater rental options geared to year-round residents than extremely-large
buildings on high-volume streets?--respects investment by those who have been able to purchase homes by supporting
incremental infill and effective setbacks? --upholds sustainability and environmental conservation goals that benefit people in
multiple ways, e.g. such as flood control and provisioning of clean water via wetlandsconservation and riparian setbacks; and, maintaining tree cover, greenspace, and natural areas
to reduce heat island effects and allow for recreation?
Bozeman's post-pandemic, Yellowstone-inspired, remote-worker and retiree boom, togetherwith a labor economy in which Big Sky exerts an outsized influence, means that building our
way into affordability is only a part of a solution (e.g. the luxury condos above WildCrumb are priced not just upon their finishes, but also upon savvy marketing in what was once
a humble neighborhood in reach of those who live and work here).
I appreciate the work of City staff and Commission, and hope it is possible to come up with aformula that does all of the above.
Thank you,
Abigail Breuer
