Dear Commissioners,
As a 30 year resident and teacher in Bozeman, I urge you not to allow the state
legislature to take the pride flag down in our city, where it has uncontroversially flown for
years as a small but important symbol of tolerance. I have seen recent changes in the
state and at MSU that make me concerned that progress for our students over the last
few decades is being eroded.
I read with interest quotes from Commissioner Fisher, that it has 'become polarized' and
you want to focus on things other than 'what flag goes on a flagpole'. I believe that if you
stop to consider for a moment WHY it has become polarized and by whom, in the
context of many current actions at many levels of government, you will recognize your
responsibility here.
This is a simple thing, and does not represent a change by Bozeman. It represents calmly
standing up to Braxton Mitchell and the axes he grinds in the legislature. He does not
speak for the city I know.
Thank you for your consideration. I write to you in my role as a teacher concerned for the
welfare and success of students but do not speak for MSU.
