It is my understanding that Bozeman is considering adopting the Pride flag as the official flag of our
city. Perhaps the residents of Bozeman should be offered a few options before only one flag is voted upon. Here are a few suggestions: 1) A Native American flag could be designed by the tribes who lived on this land for thousands of years before Bozeman was settled in the 1860s. They have been marginalized and rarely mentioned. These
earliest inhabitants could be honored by a flag.
2) A flag honoring the police, firefighters and first responders would be a way to thank those who work every day to keep us safe. 3) Our military veterans, those alive and dead, have certainly sacrificed and might deserve a flag. 4) The farmers and Ranchers who toil daily through all weather conditions should be considered for a
flag of recognition as they were some of the first settlers in and around Bozeman.
5) Bozeman is now made up mainly of people who were not born here. A flag commemorating the welcoming spirit of our city might be appropriate. 6) Bozeman is the home of one of America’s finest public educational systems and is also the home of Montana State University. A flag representing excellence in learning and higher education could be
inspirational to our younger population.
7) Etc., Etc., Etc. Wouldn’t it be better to have one all-inclusive flag of which all of Bozeman can relate and be proud? Choosing a small portion of our population to honor with a city flag is exclusive to the rest of the population. A flag celebrating the natural beauty surrounding Bozeman might be one simple option that
every citizen could agree on… or something similarly uniting instead of dividing.
