As a newer resident of Bozeman, I have observed how the City attempts to
disseminate the message that “all are welcome” in Bozeman. Replacing the
current flag with the gay pride flag is the antithesis of that. It sends the
message that LGBTQ people are welcome first and foremost; non-LGBTQ
people are only welcome in a secondary sense. In sending that message, it
divides Bozeman into two classes of people: LGBTQ (the preferred class) and
everyone else (the lower class). Am I less or more of a valued community
member based on who I have sex with? I would like to think that we are all
valued members of this community. The proposal for the LGBTQ flag
replacing Bozeman’s current flag is divisive and discriminatory and needs to
be immediately abandoned.
