Dear Commissioners,
I’m writing today as a resident of Bozeman who deeply values this community and its stated
vision of belonging for all. I urge you to adopt the Progress Pride Flag as an official city flag. This is not a political symbol, but a declaration of dignity, safety, and inclusion for everyone
who calls Bozeman home.
The Progress Pride Flag is of clear historical significance. It reflects decades of struggle, visibility, and resilience among LGBTQ+ people. Over time, it has evolved to represent a
broader and more inclusive vision of justice. This is a flag with meaning, a symbol of love, courage, and the ongoing pursuit of equity.
Personally, seeing the Pride Flag flown in public spaces matters. It tells me, and the kids and
young people in my life, that we are seen, respected, and safe. This is not about politics. It isabout presence, visibility, and belonging. For LGBTQ+ youth especially, who face
disproportionately high rates of isolation and harm, that message can be life-saving.
I work in public education and youth suicide prevention and strongly believe that the simplepursuit of increasing visibility is the first step in helping build resilience among our LGBTQ+
youth. For example, in a 2024 survey, 44% of LGBTQ+ young people in Montana seriouslyconsidered suicide in the past year, with 13% attempting suicide. Increasing visibility and
nurturing affirming environments can be life-saving, as LGBTQ+ youth report lower suicideattempt rates and better mental health outcomes when they feel supported by their
community.
Finally, the City’s Belonging in Bozeman Plan aspires to ensure all residents and visitors canthrive, regardless of identity. Flying the Pride Flag aligns directly with those values. It is a
visible and powerful way to affirm what the City has already committed to in principle.
Adopting the Pride Flag is an opportunity to show that Bozeman is ready to live into itsvalues, not just in writing, but in practice and public space.
Thank you for your time and leadership.
Sincerely,
Cristy Coughlin
