Hello, Past experience with living in this region has made it clear that what beauty, quality, history, uniquenesses, and quality of life (ie. clean air and water, adequate protections for wildlife, clean soils and lands for gardens and farming/food security, etc) a community wants to preserve requires clear codes, rules and laws, and enforcement thereof. Development pressures and personal interests move like water around rocks when only “recommendations” and “guidelines” serve to protect a community’s qualities for the future. Little by little, our region is losing its outstanding, unique and irreplaceable qualities as development moves on. We have a right to say “no” and we have a right to set limits and to make our priorities clear. If folks who want to develop don’t want to respect our perimeters, they can go elsewhere. We have a broad economy that counts on keeping the ecosystems of this region healthy, and we have a population that wants a healthy environment and values this enough to be strongly committed to preserving the ecosystems, and history and wildlife and culture, of our region. Enforcement is a necessary factor to back up codes, rules and laws. This cannot be arbitrary nor passive, but does need to be fair and very clear and well communicated. As Bozeman proceeds with updating, I strongly urge backbone to stand up for our community's qualities and to recognize that we are losing much rapidly. I applaud the city’s updating efforts, and strongly urge clear codes, rules and laws to effectively protect trees, open spaces, water, air, soil, quiet, wildlife, habitat and corridors, and so forth, essentially that which draws people to this region because their own regions have lost these aspects. Generally, once gone, gone forever, or VERY expensive and time consuming to restore. This is well known all over our country by communities that failed to act swiftly enough to establish rules and enforcement for development pressures and personal interests. Thank you for all your efforts! Sincerely, Ellen Trygstad P.O. Box 4467 Bozeman, MT
