I am writing to express serious concerns about the ongoing expansion of high-
density residential developments in our city—particularly the sprawl-style
growth that is rapidly changing the character and livability of our community.
While growth and development are essential to a thriving city, the current pace
and scale of high-density sprawl raise significant issues, including:
Traffic congestion and worsening commute times due to increased vehicle
volume on roads not designed for such use;
Overburdened infrastructure, including schools, water systems,
emergency services, and recreational amenities;
Environmental degradation, such as loss of green space, increased runoff,
and reduced air quality;
Erosion of community character, especially in established low-density or
single-family neighborhoods adjacent to these new developments;
Insufficient public transit options to support the density being created,
leading to auto-dependency and further congestion.
Smart growth principles emphasize sustainable, balanced, and well-integrated
development. What we are witnessing instead is a pattern of rapid,
uncoordinated construction with limited foresight or community input. This
threatens long-term livability and puts strain on both new and existing
residents.
I respectfully urge the city to re-evaluate its current development policies and
consider a moratorium on additional high-density projects until a
comprehensive review can be conducted. This review should assess
infrastructure capacity, environmental impacts, and how new developments
align with the city’s long-term planning goals.
Moreover, I request that the city facilitate a public forum or town hall meeting
so that residents have an opportunity to express their views and participate in
shaping the future of our neighborhoods.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that with thoughtful
leadership and community collaboration, we can pursue a growth strategy that
benefits all.
Sincerely,
Molly Siverts
