Copyright for Creatives
A Seminar on Practical Copyright Guidance for Artists
In the business of art, creating your work is often the
easy part. Protecting it can be more complex: the
internet, AI, and access to artists' work all make

copyright infringement easy to commit and difficult to
prevent. This free, three-hour session by attorney
Jennifer Webber, JD will introduce artists across
disciplines—writers, craft artists, visual artists,
musicians, and makers—to the basics of copyright law.
In this seminar, you'll:
Understand what copyright law protects (and what it doesn’t) and why
copyright registration is essential for working artists.
Learn what copyright infringement is and how to protect your work as well as
avoiding infringing others' work.
Understand how to incorporate copyright protection into your business
routine.
Be provided with additional resources and references for further support.
The session will allow sufficient Q&A time for artists to discuss issues you're currently
facing and general questions about copyright protection. You'll have a clearer
understanding of how to protect your work and have a foundation to build on as you
expand your business beyond Montana.
Participants will be provided with worksheets with related information to use during
the presentation and keep for reference.
Note: This session will briefly touch on the distinction between copyright and
trademark and why artists must consider both. In addition, there will be a brief
introduction to the importance of written contracts. Though not the focus of this
seminar, these topics will be essential to key elements of the conversation.
This seminar is sponsored by the Montana Arts Council and is free, but registration is
required and limited to 25 participants.
