PRELIMINARY SEWER AND WATER DESIGN REPORT
BOZEMAN HEALTH CAMPUS MASTER SITE PLAN
BOZEMAN, MONTANA
SITE NARRATIVE
The purpose of this preliminary report is to summarize the calculations for the existing sanitary
sewer and water mains associated with Bozeman Health Campus Master Site Plan project in
Bozeman, Montana. The project will be served by existing sanitary sewer and water mains, as
well as provide additional water service stubs and sanitary stubs to serve proposed developments
within a portion of the project site. The following report will summarize the water and sewer
main design and capacity calculations for the water and sewer services to the proposed Bozeman
Health Campus Master Site Plan project.
SITE DEVELOPMENT PLAN
The proposed development consists of five (5) phases with building expansions, parking lots, and
open space. See Appendix A – Overall Site Plan sheet C3.0.
SEWER
The existing sewer mains that provide service to the project site consist of two 8-inch and one
6-inch sewer main. The existing sewer mains tie-in with an 8-inch main that runs along the east
side of Highland Boulevard.
Capacity calculations were conducted per the City of Bozeman Design Standards and
Specifications Policy dated March 2011, updated May 2017 and Circular DEQ 4. Capacity
spreadsheets are in Appendix B. An 8-inch sewer main capacity at 75 percent full is 258-gal/min
using the minimum pipe slope of 0.004 ft/ft. A 6-inch sewer main capacity at 75 percent full is
147-gal/min using the minimum pipe slope of 0.006 ft/ft.
Phase two includes an approximate 10,000 sf expansion of the emergency department. Bozeman
Health provided an estimate of 18 full time employees with in-patient beds and wastewater flow
was estimated based on DEQ Circular 4 Table 3.1-1. The emergency department expansion will
be tied into the existing plumbing that is tied to the existing 6-in main. Phase three consists of
P:17095_06_Preliminary_Utility_Design_Report_MSP 2 (11/15/23) CS/rpe
the construction of a new parking garage with an assumed 2,000 sf of office space on the ground
floor. Occupancy was assumed at 1-person/200sf and wastewater flow was estimated based on
DEQ Circular 4 Table 3.1-1. A new service will be added to the existing 8-inch main adjacent to
the proposed location. Phase four includes construction of a new medical office building (MOB
6). Bozeman Health provided an estimate of 180 full time employees with no in-patient beds and
wastewater flow was estimated based on DEQ Circular 4 Table 3.1-1. A new service will be
added to the existing 8-inch main adjacent to the proposed location. Phase five includes a vertical
expansion of Bridger Tower. The utility design report dated September 2018 for the Bridger
Tower states the existing 8-inch sanitary sewer main was designed for the full build-out of the
tower for a total of 5 floors, resulting in a peak flow of 220 gallons per minute (gpm).
Peak flow calculations for the existing sanitary sewer pipes were completed to find the overall
peak flow contributing from the proposed developments in the 8-inch sewer mains and 6-inch
sewer main exiting the development to the east. The average daily flow exiting the subdivision
for the full build out was estimated at 1.56 gal/min. A peaking factor of 4.24 was then applied for
a peak hourly flow rate of 6.60 gal/min, which is significantly less than the 8-inch capacity of 258
gal/min stated above. See peak flow calculations.
WATER
The existing water system consists of a 10-inch diameter water main, water services, valves, and
hydrants as shown on the Overall Site Plan in Appendix A that is tied into a 12-inch main that
runs along Highland Boulevard. Portions of the 10-inch mains will have to be rerouted around
the new parking garage and MOB 6. Two new services will be added to provide water to the
parking garage and MOB 6 as well.
The average static pressure for the 13 hydrants within the project site is 79.71 psi. Hydrant
pressures were provided by City of Bozeman and should be verified. Hydrant fire flow curves for
the 13 hydrants are provided in Appendix C. Hydrant #2796 has capacity to provide 8,400 gpm
with a residual pressure of 21.89 psi, which is well above the typical minimum flowrate
requirement of 1,500 gpm at 20-psi minimum, as stated in the City of Bozeman design standards.
This hydrant is located nearest to the proposed parking garage. Hydrant #2510 has capacity to
provide 6,800 gpm with a residual pressure of 22.25 psi, which is well above the typical minimum
flowrate requirement of 1,500 gpm at 20-psi minimum, as stated in the City of Bozeman design
standards. This hydrant is located nearest to the proposed MOB 6.
CONCLUSION
Based on the assumptions provided above, the existing 8-inch sanitary sewer mains, 6-inch
sanitary sewer main, and 10-inch water main will provide the required capacity for planned
developments in the project area. Please contact Bobby Egeberg, PE for any questions pertaining
to this preliminary report by email, begeberg@sandersonstewart.com or by phone 406-922-
4308.
