Existing Water System Capacity and Fire Service Design Report
Dear Ms. Paz-Solis:
This submittal presents Allied Engineering’s evaluation of the existing City of Bozeman water main
network and required demands to serve the proposed structure at 703 West Mendenhall Street. The
project site is located within the City of Bozeman (COB) and is generally located at the northwest corner
of the intersection of North 7th Avenue and West Mendenhall Street.
The existing water distribution network is generally well looped in the area of the proposed development
with a mix of 6” and 8” diameter water mains made of cast or ductile iron. The water mains within N 7th
Ave. and W Mendenhall St. are 6” cast iron originally installed in 1901. In 2013, the water main under W
Mendenhall St. east of N 7th Ave. was replaced with 8” ductile iron. In 2024, the neighboring water main
within N 8th Ave. was also replaced with 8” ductile iron. The nearest fire hydrant is located at the
northeast corner of the intersection of N 7th Ave. and W Mendenhall St, approximately 105-ft from the
southeast corner of the proposed structure.
No new hydrants are proposed as part of this project. The proposed structure will be covered with an
automatic fire sprinkler protection system and have a Fire Department Connection at the northeast corner
of the building. The location of the fire department connection is within 115-feet of the existing fire
hydrant across the street and based on correspondence with the fire department will be acceptable. A 4-
inch Class 51, ductile iron fire service is proposed to serve the building, connecting to the existing 6-inch
cast iron water main under N 7th Ave. Sanitary sewer improvements are proposed along West Mendenhall
St. and are discussed in a separate submittal.
Domestic and fire protection water demands were estimated to assess the existing COB water
infrastructure for sufficient water supply under fire flow conditions. These demands are summarized
below in Table 1 and estimated based on 2020 and 2024 COB Design and Construction Standards,
MDEQ-Circular 4 (2023) and the COB Water Facility Plan (2017).

Needed Fire Flow was calculated in accordance to Section 5.5.2 of the City of Bozeman Water Facility
Plan (2017), including Table 5.6: 2017 IFC Minimum Require Fire Flow and Flow Duration for
Buildings. The proposed structure has automatic sprinkler systems (designed by others) and is planned to
be construction type III-B (IBC-21 B104.2). The building’s area is 21,375-FT2. After the 75% sprinkler
reduction, this building’s Needed Fire Flow is 1,000-GPM (IFC-21 B106.2) (attachment 6).
Numerous hydrants had fire flow tests performed during the Bozeman Water Facility Plan Update in fall
of 2015 to aid in calibrating the Bozeman Water Distribution model. Nearby hydrant fire flow tests
indicate the existing 6” water mains provide ample capacity for the proposed structure. A summary of
flow testing data is provided in Table 2, a map showing the location of the test hydrants is provided in
attachment 5.

The above hydrant flow tests were selected for analysis due to their proximity to the project site and
representation of various levels of network connectivity. The most conservative test was #47, at the
northwest corner of West Babcock St. and South 4th Ave. At this location, the flow and test hydrants are
only fed by one 6” cast iron main running east/west along West Babcock St. Despite the limited
connectivity surrounding test #47, the flow hydrant still had an available fire flow of 3,684-gpm at 20-psi,
more than the peak hour demand plus needed fire flow of the proposed structure at 703 W Mendenhall.
Given the increased connectivity and capacity within the COB water main network in the vicinity of N 7th
and W Mendenhall, the existing water system is expected to provide adequate capacity for the proposed
structures peak hour demand plus needed fire flow.
Static pressures at the project site were estimated based on the observed static pressures from Table 2 and
ground elevations from the COB LiDAR contours at the test hydrants. The static pressure at the site is
estimated to be roughly 125-psi. This is consistent with what is expected for the South pressure zone. See
Table 3 below for additional calculations.

Additional information for the design report is provided below. The following sections correspond to the
Engineer’s Report outlined in DEQ Circular-1:
1.1.1 General information, including:
The water system is owned and operated by the City of Bozeman. Facility plans related to the
treatment, distribution, and other relevant information have been developed separately. The
existing water system along with the proposed fire service are shown on attachment 2. The
existing water distribution network is generally well looped in the area of the proposed
development with a mix of 6” and 8” diameter water mains made of cast or ductile iron. The
water mains within N 7th Ave. and W Mendenhall St. are 6” cast iron originally installed in 1901.
In 2013, the water main under W Mendenhall St. east of N 7th Ave. was replaced with 8” ductile
iron. In 2024, the neighboring water main within N 8th Ave. was also replaced with 8” ductile
iron. The nearest fire hydrant is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of N 7th Ave.
and W Mendenhall St, approximately 105-ft from the southeast corner of the proposed structure.
Refer to the City of Bozeman Water Facility Plan dated July 2017 and the City of Bozeman
Wastewater Collection Facilities Plan Update dated June 2015 for additional information. The
project developer is Missouri Heights and their mailing address is: 4600 Sourdough Lane,
Bozeman, MT, 59715.
1.1.2 Extent of water works system, including:
The project is limited to the installation of a 4-inch ductile iron fire service and 2-inch domestic
service connecting to the existing 6-inch cast iron water main in W Mendenhall St. The proposed
fire service is for the sole benefit and use of the proposed structure at 703 W Mendenhall St.
1.1.3 Alternate plans:
No alternate plans have been proposed. Constructing the proposed building requires a 4-inch fire
service.
1.1.4 Site Conditions:
Three boreholes were drilled on site during December 2023 and January 2024. The soil
throughout the site consists of 18 to 20-feet or silt/clay that overlies sandy gravel with cobbles.
The sandy gravel extended to the bottom of all three boreholes at depths of 36.5-feet. At the time
of drilling, the groundwater depth ranged from 22 to 25-feet. If required, a groundwater discharge
permit will be obtained. From previous work we do not anticipate a permit will be required.
Groundwater generally flows to the northwest.

1.1.5 Water use data, including:
Items related to water use data for the overall system have all been evaluated and provided by the
City of Bozeman Water Facility Plan Update dated July 2017. Analysis of demands for each of
the adjoining lots is beyond the scope of this report and submittal. Estimated demands specific to
the proposed structure are shown in Table 1.
1.1.6 Flow requirements, including:
Domestic water use will be delivered to the proposed structure by a 2-inch Copper Type K water
service. The design of the domestic water service is beyond the scope of this report. Domestic
average day demands for the proposed structure were estimated based on planned residential and
commercial occupancy, citing 2020 and 2024 City of Bozeman Design Standards and
Specifications (COB DSS), and Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ)
Circular 4 respectively.
Using the 2020 COB design standards, the 13 residential dwelling units have an average water
usage flow rate of 170 gallons per capita per day, and a dwelling occupancy rate of 2.11 people
per unit. The 2024 COB design standards specify an average water use flow rate of 135 gallons
per capita per day, and a dwelling occupancy rate of 2.17 people per unit.
For the 1,375-ft2 office, an average water use flow rate of 13 gallons per day per employee was
assumed as outlined for a “Office” in MDEQ-Circular 4, Table 3.1-1 “Typical Wastewater Flows
from Commercial, Industrial, and Other Nonresidential Sources”.
For the 549-ft2 bakery, an average water use flow rate of 6 gallons per day per customer and 10
gallons per day per employee was assumed as outlined for a “Coffee Shop” in MDEQ-Circular 4
Table 3.1-2 “Typical Wastewater Flows from Recreational Facilities”. Maximum Day Demands
and Peak Hour Demands were estimated based on peaking factors from the 2020 and 2024 City
of Bozeman Design Standards. Domestic demands are outlined in Table 1 above, and calculations
are provided in attachment 4.
1.1.7 Sources of water supply:
Items related to source of water supply have all been evaluated and provided by the City of
Bozeman water facility plan dated July 2017.
1.1.8 Proposed treatment processes:
Not applicable. There are no new treatment processes proposed with the water main extension.

1.1.9 Sewage system available:
Due to the increased demands the proposed structure has, an 8” sewer main extension from N 8th
along W Mendenhall is proposed to serve the new structure and surrounding area. The proposed
sewer main extension will connect to an existing manhole and 8” PVC sanitary sewer main that
flows north within N 8th Ave. The existing 4” PVC sanitary sewer service connecting to the 6” W
Mendenhall St. sewer main will be abandoned. A new 6” PVC sanitary sewer service is proposed
to connect the new structure and 8” sanitary sewer main. Attachment 3 shows the proposed sewer
main extension and is discussed in further detail in a separate submittal. Additional items related
to sewage systems have all been evaluated and provided by the City of Bozeman Wastewater
Collection Facilities Plan Update dated July 2015.
