Sewer Main Extension Design Report
Dear Ms. Paz-Solis:
This submittal presents Allied Engineering’s proposed sanitary sewer main extension to serve the proposed
structure at 703 West Mendenhall Street. The project site is located within the City of Bozeman (COB) and
is generally located at the northwest corner of the intersection of North 7th Avenue and West Mendenhall
Street.
The existing sanitary sewer collection network is comprised of gravity mains of various sizes and materials
reflecting the network seeing piecemeal upgrades as needed for capacity or maintenance. These gravity
mains generally flow to the north following regional topography with many east/west mains providing
service along local topography. Currently, the only sanitary sewer main at the intersection of N 7th Ave.
and W Mendenhall St. is a 6-inch vitrified clay tile pipe originally installed in the early 1900s that was lined
using Cured-in-Place-Pipe in 2013. This main flows from a manhole in the intersection, east toward N 5th
Ave. where the main has been upsized to 8” PVC. Existing structures on the west side of N 7th Ave. have
previously connected to the existing main across the intersection with long services. It has been indicated
by the COB that the existing 6-inch vitrified clay pipe would need to be upgraded prior to making any
connections. For this reason, a new shorter section of main will be constructed with an outfall to the west.
The existing structure located at 703 W Mendenhall St. is served by a domestic water service connected to
the existing water main within N 7th Ave. and a gravity sanitary sewer service which connects to the existing
sanitary sewer main within W Mendenhall St. east of N 7th Ave. A new 2” domestic water service and 4”
fire service are proposed to serve the new structure and are discussed in a separate submittal. The proposed
building configuration will require a new sanitary sewer service. Due to the condition of the existing
sanitary sewer main located at the intersection of N 7th Ave. and W. Mendenhall Street, a new sewer main
will be extended from North 8th Avenue. The alternative would be to replace the existing W. Mendenhall
St. sewer main from N 7th Ave. to N 5th Ave.
The proposed sewer main extension will outfall to an existing manhole and 8” PVC sanitary sewer main
that flows north within N 8th Ave. The outfall path then generally heads north and east from N 8th Ave. to
the Rouse Interceptor and then the North Frontage Road Interceptor (NFRI), see attachment 1 for the
proposed outfall path. The existing sanitary sewer mains along this path are primarily vitrified clay sewer
mains of increasing size, 12-inch to 18-inch, between N 8th Ave. and N Rouse Ave. At N Rouse Ave. and
E Tamarack St., a 30-inch PVC main flows north to the NFRI and the COB Wastewater Treatment Plant.
There are no known condition or capacity issues of the mains along the proposed outfall path prior to the
interceptors. The existing 4-inch PVC sanitary sewer service connecting to the 6” W Mendenhall St. sewer
main will be abandoned. A new 6-inch PVC sanitary sewer service is proposed to connect the new structure
and 8” sanitary sewer main.

The proposed structure is mixed residential and commercial; wastewater demands were estimated to size
the proposed sanitary sewer main extension and service by use type referencing 2020 and 2024 COB Design
Standards and Specifications, and MDEQ Circular-4. No sand and grease traps are required as all food
preparation will be performed off-site and brought to the property. Wastewater demands are summarized
in Table 1 below. Using 2020 COB Design Standards, total average day demand with infiltration was
estimated to be 3,233-gpd or 2.24-gpm. Peak hour demand with infiltration was estimated to be 13,506-gpd
or 9.38-gpm. Using 2024 COB Design Standards, total average day demand with infiltration was estimated
to be 2,608-gpd or 1.81-gpm. Peak hour demand with infiltration was estimated to be 10,882-gpd or 7.56-
gpm. See attachment 4 for estimated sanitary sewer demand calculations. The proposed 6” sanitary sewer
service has a capacity, at 75% full, of 372,252-gpd or 259.9-gpm. The proposed 8” sanitary sewer main has
a capacity, at 75% full, of 1,399,437-gpd or 974.3-gpm, allocating excess capacity for future growth in this
area. See attachment 5 for sanitary sewer pipe capacity calculations and assumptions.

Additional information for the design report is provided below. The following sections correspond to the
Engineer’s Report outlined in DEQ Circular 2:
11.11 Problem defined:
The overall wastewater system is owned and operated by the City of Bozeman. Facility plans
related to the collection, treatment, discharge, and other relevant information have been developed
separately. Refer to the City of Bozeman Wastewater Collection Facilities Plan Update dated June
2015 and the City of Bozeman Water Facility Plan Update dated July 2017 for additional
information.
11.12 Design Conditions:
The proposed structure is mixed residential and commercial; wastewater demands were estimated
to size the proposed sanitary sewer main extension and service by use type.
Using the 2020 COB Design Standards, the 13 residential dwelling units have an average
wastewater flow rate of 89 gallons per capita per day, and a dwelling occupancy rate of 2.11 people
per unit, resulting in an average day demand of 2,441-gpd. Using the 2024 COB Design Standards,
the units have an average wastewater flow rate of 64.4 gallons per capita per day, and a dwelling
occupancy rate of 2.17 people per unit, resulting in an average day demand of 1,817-gpd.
For the 1,375-ft2 office, an average wastewater flow rate of 13 gallons per day per employee was
assumed as outlined for a “Office” in MDEQ-Circular 4 Table 3.1-1 “Typical Wastewater Flows
from Commercial, Industrial, and Other Nonresidential Sources”. Assuming 10 employees, the
average day demand is 130-gpd.
For the 549-ft2 bakery, an average wastewater flow rate of 6 gallons per day per customer and 10
gallons per day per employee was assumed as outlined for a “Coffee Shop” in MDEQ-Circular 4
Table 3.1-2 “Typical Wastewater Flows from Recreational Facilities”. Assuming 4 employees and
100 customers, the average day demand is 640-gpd. No sand and grease traps are required as all
food preparation will be performed off-site and brought to the property.

An infiltration rate of 150 gal/acre/day was added to the flow demand calculations per the COB
Design Standards and Specifications. Based on 2020 and 2024 COB Design Standards, the total
population is assumed to be 141.43 &142.21 persons respectively, both resulting in a peaking factor
of 4.20. Using the 2020 COB Design Standards, including infiltration, the total average day demand
was estimated to be 3,233-gpd or 2.24-gpm. Including infiltration, the peak hour demand was
estimated to be 13,506-gpd or 9.38-gpm. Using the 2024 COB Design Standards, including
infiltration, the total average day demand was estimated to be 2,608-gpd or 1.81-gpm. Including
infiltration, the peak hour demand was estimated to be 10,882-gpd or 7.56-gpm. See attachment 4
for estimated sanitary sewer demand calculations.
11.13 Impact on Existing Wastewater Facilities:
The impact of the proposed project on all existing wastewater facilities has been evaluated as part
of the City of Bozeman Wastewater Collection Facilities Plan Updated dated June 2015. No
significant impact is anticipated beyond the scope of the Plan Update.
11.14 Project Description:
The proposed sewer main extension will start at a new manhole located east of the ally between N
8th Ave and N 7th Ave. and flow west, connecting to an existing manhole at the intersection of N
8th Ave. and W Mendenhall St. An 8” PVC sanitary sewer main installed in 2024 then flows north
within N 8th Ave. The existing structure’s 4” PVC sanitary sewer service connecting to the 6” W
Mendenhall St. sewer main will be abandoned. A new 6” PVC sanitary sewer service is proposed
to connect the new structure and 8” sanitary sewer main at the new manhole.
11.15 Drawings:
Drawings will be completed as part of a future submittal.
11.16 Design Criteria:
This project was designed in accordance with the City of Bozeman Design Standards and
Specifications Policy, including Addendum No. 7, dated March 13th, 2020, specifically, section
V.B. Sanitary Sewer System Design Criteria; MDEQ Circular 2; MPWSS; COB Modifications to
MPWSS; the Uniform Plumbing Code; and the COB Wastewater Facility Plan Update dated June
2015. Additionally demands from the City of Bozeman Design Standards and Specifications Policy
dated October 2024 were considered.
11.17 Site Information:
Three boreholes were drilled on site during December 2023 and January 2024. The soil throughout
the site consists of 18 to 20-feet or silt/clay that overlies sandy gravel with cobbles. The sandy
gravel extended to the bottom of all three boreholes at depths of 36.5-feet. At the time of drilling,
the groundwater depth ranged from 22 to 25-feet. If required, a groundwater discharge permit will
be obtained. From previous work we do not anticipate a permit will be required. Groundwater
generally flows to the northwest.
11.18 Alternative Selection/Analysis:
The proposed design was chosen as the best alternative for providing service to the west side of the
N 7th Ave. and W Mendenhall St. intersection due to its simplicity and added network service area.
The alternative design analyzed was replacing the existing 6” CIPP lined clay tile sewer main east
of N 7th Ave. to N 5th Ave. This alternative was deemed to be unnecessarily disruptive to the
surrounding area, both requiring a crossing of N 7th Ave. (Non-Interstate National Highway System
