To whom it may concern,
Please do not approve to have taxpayers fund the tenants right to counsel.
Having been both a tenant and landlord I've seen both sides.
If I'm a tenant who has violated part of the agreement (lease) with the landlord, I can expectthe consequences outlined in the agreement, which often include eviction.
There are lots of support services already for both landlords and tenants, including ways to
understand both parties' responsibilities according to the agreement.
If a tenant has a legitimate reason to fight against an unlawful eviction, they can get alawyer and request that the losing party pay the winning parties legal fees. In the case of an
unlawful eviction, the tenant should incurred minimal of any expenses in this case. If the tenant does not believe they have a winning case against unlawful eviction, then they
may choose to simply fulfill the conditions of their agreement or find somewhere else tolive.
Please do not ask taxpayers to cover legal fees/representation for tenants who are violating
the conditions of their agreement. Aside from encouraging free representation to combat legitimate evictions, the expense will
ultimately be passed on to all tenants through rent increases.
Please vote NO to covering tenants representation for eviction cases.
Thank you for your consideration.
