Dear City Council,
I am emailing with concern that it has become a 2025 priority for the City of Bozeman to
push a proposal to use tax payer dollars to hire lawyers to represent tenants against
landlords.. I am a concerned citizen and do not wish for the City of Bozeman to use our
hard-earned tax dollars to create an uneven playing field where there is city-funded legal
support for tenants whereas there would not be an equal level of city-funded legal
representation for landlords. This is clearly a biased use of taxpayer dollars and
discriminates against landlords which I do not support. This is a slippery slope when
government gets behind one group against another. There are already avenues for legal
support for tenants and with the limited rental housing available in Bozeman anyway,
this kind of policy will only discourage landlords from offering reasonable prices to
tenants which exacerbates our housing problem.
Please take leadership and resist the push for this kind of biased use of taxpayer funds
against landlords. If tenants have grievances there are already services to help them in
these cases where justice can be served. We do not want an uneven use of tax payer
dollars and we also do not want to create a sense of pitting one group against the other
where the City chooses winners by throwing our hard-earned tax dollars toward attorney
fees for city citizens who need to handle their own legal issues themselves.
Thank you for your consideration.
Kind Regards,
Ashley Denton
