On my street, a few boulevard trees have died and been removed, and we haven’t been able to replace them because a fiber optic line now runs along the entire boulevard. I submitted an application to the Cost Share Program for replanting in 2024, but it was rejected due to the presence of this new fiber optic line. From what I understand—and I could be mistaken—this fiber optic line is a privately owned utility and doesn’t pose the same safety risks as something like a gas line. While tree roots might eventually pinch the cable, the impact would likely be limited to service, not safety. As such, it seems reasonable to consider an exemption from the current 10-foot utility buffer requirement. Being that Yellowstone Fiber has installed fiber optic lines all across Bozeman, it means a lot of areas may never get their trees back.
