ARTeries - The Lifeblood of Arts In Montana White Divider Supaman performs at Red Ants Pants Photo: Eric Heidle May calm heads prevail This Wednesday DOGE visited the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), put most of the staff on administrative leave, and shut down funding to humanities agencies across the nation—including our venerated Humanities Montana. This Tuesday the Administration ordered the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to shut down, putting most employees on leave (some have been restored). Several states have already lost current FY federal support for libraries. Montana State Library has not received any notification on funding yet. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is preparing for its own visit from DOGE, which is expected. It is clearly a time defined by uncertainty. To participate in the National Humanities Alliance’s call to save the NEH, go here. https://p2a.co/DdtlGIT The Montana Arts Council, Humanities Montana, and the State Library are all partners in sustaining the intellectual and cultural life of Montanans. We are planning and strategizing, together and within our own agencies, seeking the best way to preserve our great programs, adjust to the unknown, and still do the good work out in Montana’s communities. As alarming as some of these losses are and will be, we can get through this. The continuing resolution that Congress passed included funding for all the cultural agencies at consistent levels. We have faith that our congressional delegation will strongly support that work. In the meantime, we encourage you to let your leaders and lawmakers know how much Montana’s libraries, humanities, and arts activities mean to you. This is a time to stay calm, work together, speak clearly, and have faith in each other. And let me know how I can help. I believe fundamentally in the principles of liberty, democracy, and the right of all people to pursue a meaningful, connected, healthy life. Those deeply held American values are expressed, explored, and deepened only through art, culture, and the humanities. Thank you all for the work you do.
