Dear Parking Commission, On behalf of Cancer Support Community Montana, I am writing to request relief from our current parking situation, which has become very problematic. Cancer Support Community Montana, a local not-for-profit business which has been in its current location for more than a decade, is located at 102 S. 11th Avenue. See map below for details. We are situated on the corner of S. 11th and W. Babcock streets within the Bozeman High School Residential Parking District. While parking has long been a source of question, more often than not there has been an understanding that we would have participants (individuals with cancer) and guests parking on the street, and they would not be ticketed. The typical visitor comes for an hour or so to attend a cancer support related class or program. This has worked well enough for years; however, recently, a number of our participants and guests have received parking tickets. I am not sure what has changed, but I do know this presents significant challenges (and may be a barrier to someone getting the supportive cancer care they need). We are asking for your help with relief, please. While I do not understand all of the rules and regulations associated with ‘parking districts,’ I am requesting some relief for our organization which could involve one or more of the following options: 1. Exclude our side of S. 11th Ave between the alley and W. Babcock (adjacent to our location) from the parking restrictions. Consider it a small carve-out. This is our preferred option. 2. Exclude S. 11th Ave from W. Babcock to W. Olive from the parking restrictions. Consider it a carve-out. 3. Allow for temporary parking on S. 11th Ave from W. Babcock to W. Olive as this would allow our participants and guests to park for limited times only (maybe 2 hours at a time). 4. Allow us to purchase visitor parking passes that we could somehow share among visitors. 5. Abolish the Bozeman High School Residential Parking District altogether. My understanding is that this was created when there was only one high school and parking was a serious issue – with two high schools now, I do not believe this remains such a challenge. 6. I suspect there are other options as well. I have met with Nic Foken, parking manager, and we discussed the history, the dilemma, and possible solutions. I bring this request for your consideration as I believe this Commission can resolve the situation. Please let me know if you have questions or suggestions, and I am glad to discuss in person; otherwise, thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing back from you.
