Dear City Commissioners,
I am writing to express my support of the sidewalk variance for 701 N. Montana Ave. My
name is Zoe, I have lived just around the corner at 5 East Aspen St for 10 years, and I am amother of one elementary aged kiddo and one middle schooler. My husband and I have been
living in the NE neighborhood for over 20 years, first as renters and now as homeowners. Wemoved to this part of the city for its unique characteristics (even more unique 20 years ago
compared to today!), walkability, and small neighborhood feel. I don't feel as though forcingthe owners of 701 N Montana Ave to put in a sidewalk that goes to nowhere makes any sense
at all; the sidewalk will take the place of old-growth lilacs and mature trees, AND, it isunlikely to see much use at all. There are 2 "sidewalks to nowhere" on Aspen St, one between
Black and Bozeman on the N side of Aspen and the other between Bozeman and Montana onthe S side of Aspen. I walk with my children to Hawthorne on a daily basis, taking the route of
Aspen to N Montana, and we rarely move from the street to these sidewalks for the150ft thatthey exist (exact distance an estimate)- it just doesn't make sense. From my perspective, there
is no benefit to creating a sidewalk where one has never existed, one that will lead to nowhere, and one that destroys mature landscaping, only to say that city building/planning codes were
followed. Please consider common sense when reviewing the application for thissidewalk variance.
Thank you for your time,
Zoe Hallowell
