Hello City Clerk,
Could you please make sure this public comment and the attachment makes it to alldepartment heads, as well as the City Commissioners. Thank you.
I'm very grateful for the Staff and Commissioners who attended the Jandt Neighborhood UDC
engagement in January. I will admit that I was disappointed at the low turnout ofneighborhood residents. We are pretty working class here in the Jandt Neighborhood, and
folks are wiped out after a full day of work and their kids' activities. A meeting is just a bigask and we usually get older retired homeowners to attend. I know the City wants to hear
from other groups. Though I will always defend the old timers in my community!
With a desire to hear from more working residents and renters, I created a survey that I put outto our neighborhood email list. I also printed and distributed 200 flyers with QR codes to the
survey and targeted known renter households.
As a result 54 people filled out the survey. I've attached the results for your information andfor the public record. I believe our neighborhood is 50-60% renters, but 25% of survey
respondents were renters.
Major takeaways:
Most residents in our neighborhood have been here between 1-5 years.
Most responders don't know their zoning or if they are in or out of the NCODWe average 3 cars per household. No respondents had 0 cars.
Over 85% of properties have had some work done in the last decade.about 25% of respondents would add a backyard cottage or apartment in their home if
they had help financing it.Our residents value thoughtful neighbors, the affordability of our neighborhood,
mature trees and gardens, quiet streets and walkability. Not everyone plans to stay in Bozeman after college.
Everyone is concerned about every potential impact of redevelopment. The parking district regulations and management needs work!
People want new development to be sympathetic to the existing character of theneighborhood.
1 person is ok with taller buildings, all other respondents are quite uncomfortable withtaller buildings.
Far and away my favorite survey quote; "Please don't make our rent go up, we're poor. Keep Jandt slightly ghetto."
Also I will note, the dog Felix referred to in one comment is not malnourished or somehow
held in cruel captivity. He's a husky, super friendly, and healthy. The young renter justdoesn't have a fenced yard so tether's Felix to a tree in the front yard of the apartment building
sometimes. There is no problem here. But as you'll see people say crazy/funny/angry thingswhen it's anonymous.
Thanks for taking a few minutes to read over the survey results. I hope they can inform the
UDC update.
