ARTeries January 30, 2025 White Divider News in the Arts It’s been a roller-coaster week for many of you (and us!) whose work is fueled by federal grant funding. Just as we were issuing an update to our constituents about the news of a potentially disruptive federal funding freeze, we learned that it had been rescinded. Is this story over? Probably not. Things can change in a moment. Our guidance to constituents in the arts and culture field across Montana is: Stay tuned. We'll bring you updates and keep you posted. Happy end of January. Do something creative today. Krys Holmes Executive Director krys.holmes@mt.gov Maria Rosario Jackson Jaune Quick-to-See Smith Farewell to NEA Chair Jackson: “To my core, I continue to believe that we cannot live up to our promise as a nation of opportunity and justice without the full and intentional integration of the arts into all aspects of our lives, all areas of policy and practice, and the systems we rely on to care for each other.” – Dr. Maria Rosario Jackson in her open letter upon her resignation, Jan 16, 2025 Message From Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD, Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts What’s happening at the NEA in the new administration? Mary Anne Carter, Chair of the NEA from 2019-2021, is now Senior Advisor, temporarily holding the office of the Chair and advising the administration on selecting a new NEA chair. Word on the street is that Carter is considering potential chairs who understand government and the granting world, and who will be dedicated to carrying on the good work of the Endowment. MAC is tracking that appointment process, and also the new proposed federal budget, scheduled to be hammered out in March. We're saddened to hear of the passing of one of Montana's most important and influential visual artists, Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, whose fusion of landscape, graphic design, pop culture, and illustration pioneered new ground in contemporary arts. Born on the Flathead Reservation, Jaune was a Governor's Arts Award recipient in 2018. She passed away on January 24 at the age of 85. Read more about Jaune's career at ARTnews. Krista Pasini Post-It Note Project Artist Spotlight Billings artist and MAC grantee Krista Marshall Pasini just closed a moving installation and performance series at Yellowstone Art Museum (www.artmuseum.org), the Post-It Note Project. It deployed simple sticky notes, like Krista’s dad used when he was ill, to create a 9-month mosaic of events around memory, loss, grief, and connections, including a “Stuck on You” performance series. The sticky-note format invited powerful community participation.
