To: Bozeman City Commissioners Dear Commissioners, Our recent significant snowfall in Bozeman highlighted a regular occurrence. Streets were not plowed even on the designated day of the week. With an average of 86 inches(1892 to 2016) of snowfall per year, snow plowing is imperative for effective transportation and safety. In talking with Matt Workman, Assistant Streets DivisionSuperintendent, I discovered that excessive illegal parking greatly inhibits snowplowing. In addition, legal parking also inhibits effective snowplowing. Fixing this problem is a City Commission’s opportunity. Here’s how to do so. #1. Strengthen and enforce current parking regulations. No storage of vehicles. They must be moved every 72 hours. Currently, there are hundreds of vehicles violating this ordinance. Tow them! Or, ticket them and change the fine to muchmore than the current $30. NO MORE WARNINGS! Get stored vehicles off the public right-of-way. #2. Create a comprehensive street parking ban in each neighborhood onscheduled plowing days. Enforce it. This would make plowing the streets much easier. Our Streets Division workers will thank you. Your constituents willappreciate this change once they see the positive effect. Our streets can be cleared on the designated plow days via this change. Yes, I understand there are a lot of street parking issues. But MANY municipalities dealwith the exact same situation and DO NOT tolerate vehicles blocking plowing. This situation must be fixed. Please, take the time to enact and enforce effective street management laws. We live inBozeman because we enjoy winter. But we don’t enjoy getting stuck driving on our streets. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to seeing you take significant steps to improve our snowplowing. Gary Burdick 372 Greenway Ct. Bozeman.
