Greeting Commissioners,
I have lived here since 1981, and before that attended MSU from
1967-1972. I do not live in the city limits of Bozeman, but I do own
property in Bozeman city limits and pay taxes. I understand and respect
the dilemma you are in with housing and commercial development in
Bozeman. I must admit that I am not pleased with the development around
Bozeman, especially that which presents as affordable housing, but
really is not. My current view is now shaped due to seeing what is
being built and it is not housing designed for young families. I feel
the way development of housing is going is not for families, which to me
indicates that the decision makers of housing are changing the culture
and future population of Bozeman. I feel it is heading into a
population that does not have children, cannot afford to live here, even
with "affordable housing", and only rich people will be able to live
here. The end result will be a significant change in our population
which will affect our schools, our businesses, and our community in the
future. We will be building for an aging population.
I urge the city commission to publicly discuss and decide what type of
future the people of Bozeman want and that the commission, and staff,
will support and make decisions that meet that vision. I feel the
commission is in the position to implement a vision that allows Bozeman
to be a family friendly place, where people want to come and live, and
they can afford to live here. Growth can be good, if managed well, or
it can be bad, if not managed well. What path are we on, and what can
we do to create the best path forward. Allowing developers to dictate
what our city becomes is not good for any of us. If they truly want to
build in Bozeman, in a positive way, then they need to build as the
people of Bozeman want, a family friendly and affordable space. If they
don't want to do that then that is fine, they can build somewhere else.
Bozeman will not collapse and go away if we control building in a more
community friendly way.
Please take control of the Guthrie project and do not let it happen.
Use this as an example to developers that the city of Bozeman wants
family friendly and affordable housing. They can build that if they
choose, but money will rule their decision.
Thank you for your service and for reading my current thoughts. I wish
you the best.
