Next year my family will celebrate 100 years in Bozeman. I was born here in 1935. My mother, a nurse, moved to
Bozeman to care for Rose Hogan Story, daughter of Bozeman pioneer Nelson Story, in her last years. That inspired
my parents to build one of Montana’s first state licensed nursing homes. The Florence Convalescent Center, named
after my mother, was built in 1958 on North 5th and West Villard. Today the 66-year-old building, where many
Bozeman residents spent their final days, is under consideration for demolishment by the Guthrie Project. I think it’s
important to carefully consider the importance of preserving historically significant places. Family heritage gives us
a sense of belonging, similar to a city’s heritage. Newly built homes are similar to grandchildren, just now becoming
part of a community, and older buildings connected to Bozeman’s pioneers are like grandparents. They remind us of
our heritage and where we came from. It’s important to maintain Bozeman’s heritage.
