Here is an update on the upcoming Transportation Alternatives (TA) Program Call for Applicationsand application reimbursement.
As of November 26, 2024, applicants with a population of less than 5,000 based on the 2020Census, applicants that are outside of an Urban Area, and applicants that are Tribal governments
that wish to receive an application reimbursement of $5,000, can now begin incurring costs. Please see the link on the right side of the TA website titled "Application Reimbursement" for more
information. Transportation Alternatives Program | Montana Department of Transportation (MDT)
The TA Program Call for Applications will begin on January 10, 2025 and applications will be due
on April 9, 2025.
Advice for applicants to consider prior to the Call for Applications: • Ensure there is public support for your project by engaging locals and organizations through
discussions and public meetings.• Discuss the project with adjacent landowners to gain support, especially if right-of-way,
easements, or construction permits are necessary.• Consider if your project involves utility impacts/relocations. If it does, begin discussions with the
utility companies to get their approval on the project and work through concerns they may have.
• Secure local match funding, if applicable (many projects will require 13.42% local matchingfunds)
• Work with an engineer on the feasibility of the project, design details, and estimating the projectcosts and risks (is there enough right-of-way; what are the utility impacts; how will the drainage
impacts be handled; etc.)• If your project is “on-system” (on an MDT route or right-of-way) begin discussing the project with
the MDT District office to gain their approval and work through any concerns they may have.
Both Capital and Pavement Preservation applications and instructions will be posted to the website
on January 10, 2025. The applications will be similar to the 2023 application. If you wish to see acopy of the 2023 application and scoring instruction, please let me know and I can email you a
copy.
The five Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Areas of Billings, Missoula, Great Falls,Gallatin Valley, and Helena will be administering their own Call for Applications for TA projects
within each MPO area. Contact the respective MPO for questions related to the MPO's Call for
Application process and timeline.
