NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY
This site is a single-story, single-family residence with a basement, built in the mid-century Ranch style. The house has an L-shaped
plan and is sided with hardboard and brick veneer. The house is covered with an asphalt shingle hipped roof, and includes a small, shed roof over an enclosed backyard patio on the east end of the south façade.
The primary façade faces north onto W Villard Street and includes two pedestrian entrances and an enclosed single car garage. The
primary entrance is located on the western portion of the façade and is characterized as a stoop accessed by a set of four concrete
stairs and covered by the L portion of the hipped roof. The concrete stairs are screened by a brick veneer knee wall. The projecting portion of the front façade features two rectangular windows, one single pane and one sliding.
The secondary pedestrian entrance is located immediately west of the garage and includes a rectangular single pane light. A large
picture window composed of two larger single glass panes flanked by smaller casement windows is centered on the front façade. The
garage door is a tilt-up retractable type with three rectangular window lights. A brick chimney is located within the northeastern
section of the roof structure and aligns with the eastern edge of the front picture window.
Another large picture window is in the center of the south façade, also including casement windows on either side. Based on the roof
structure, it appears that the enclosed patio was later added to the residence. It is covered with the same hardboard siding as the
rest of the house and is sheltered beneath an asphalt shingle shed roof. The picture window on the south façade appears to be
original and the windows around the enclosed patio appear to all be original to when the patio was added. All include wood sashing.
The other windows around the house are sliding vinyl sashed, while the basement windows (present on the west end of the north
and south facades) are small sliding windows with metal sashes. There are two skylights on the patio roof and two smaller ones on
the east end of the south facing roof of the house.

An additional feature is an open lean-to shed anchored on the west façade of the house and the fence along the west border of the
property, which may be for storage or a dog kennel. Vegetation on the property includes both mature deciduous and coniferous trees
around the property, as well as a few apple and plum trees. A concrete parking pad/driveway is in front of the garage, and concrete
paths extend from the driveway to the front door and around the east façade of the house.
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
Prepared by Crystal Alegria, Extreme History Project, Bozeman, MT
The property was originally purchased and owned by William Beall. Karp’s Addition was surveyed, subdivided and platted into lots, blocks, streets, avenues and alleys on October 11, 1945 by John Karp and Treentje Karp, his wife; Floyd Spady and Florence Spady, his
wife; J. A. Spady and Maggie Spady, his wife; and John P. Cloninger and Mary Cloninger, his wife. The addition was filed for record on
April 5, 1946.
The residence on this property was built in 1962 by Emil Martel. Emil Martel purchased this property on May 3, 1962 and built a residential property that he quickly sold to Pierre W. and Frances L. Martinet on September 26, 1962. Emil Martel had been born in
Friedenstal, Ukraine, a son of Johann and Karoline Junker Martel. Emil grew up in Ukraine, marrying Adeline Losing in 1934. During
WWII they were evacuated to Germany and remained there until 1951 when they immigrated to the United States. They settled first
in Baker, MT and then moved to Bozeman, MT in 1956. Adeline had been born on April 20, 1915 in Makarowa, Ukraine to Jakob and
Lydia Singer Losing. Adeline and Emil were married on December 13, 1934 in Birsula, Ukraine. Emil died in 1988 and Adeline died in
2004. They were buried together at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (William Martel, personal communication, 2019). On
March 1, 1960, Emil and his son, William, formed Martel Construction. The first houses Martel Construction built were on North 6th
Street in Bozeman, MT (William Martel, personal communication, 2019).
The first occupants of the house at 314 W Villard St were Pierre W. and Frances L. Martinet, who lived there briefly. Mr. Martinet
worked at Montana State College (now Montana State University) as an assistant professor (R. L. Polk & Co., 1963 and 1964). Pierre
and Frances Martinet sold the property to Raymond J. and Carolyn Jean Tatarka on December 31, 1964.
Raymond and Carolyn Jean Tatarka lived in this residence during ownership. While living here, Raymond worked for Garrett Fruit Lines in 1965 and was the house manager for the Rialto Theatre in 1966 and 1967 (R. L. Polk & Co., 1965 – 1967). The Tatarka’s sold
this property to Walter G. Jr. and Barbara Ann Heid on August 22, 1967.
Walter and Barbara Ann Heid lived in this house for the first few years of ownership. Walter was born on August 02, 1932 to Alice
Elizabeth (Lewis) and Walter G. Heid, Sr in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Walter grew up in Pleasant Hill until 1941 when his family moved to a farm west of Harrisonville, MO. He graduated from Harrisonville High School in 1950 and attended the University of Missouri at
Columbia for two years. Walter then served in the U.S. Air Force for four years from near the end of the Korean War in 1952 until
1956, serving at bases in California and Japan. After being discharged, Walter returned to his parent’s farm in Harrisonville and, in
1957, met and married Barbara Ann Hess. They went to the University of Missouri, Columbia where Walter finished his Bachelor of
Science degree in Agriculture in 1958 and his Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics in 1960.
Walter and Barbara then moved to Washington, D.C. where he was employed by the Economic Research Service (ERS) of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture. By this time, Walter and Barbara had three children, Leiann, Elizabeth and George. After seven years in
the Washington, D.C. area, Walter had the opportunity to work at a Land Grant University of his choice where the ERS had a field
office. He chose Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman and moved the family to Montana in 1967. He worked at MSU on a
cooperative agreement with the Department of Agricultural Economics and was an adjunct faculty member. Walter taught Farm and
Ranch Management and co-authored a textbook, Grain Marketing Economics, with another University professor (Atkinson Funeral
Homes 2023).

In 1975, ERS closed some field offices and Walter’s career moved the family to Kansas State University in Manhattan where he
continued to work for the ERS-USDA and, again, was an adjunct faculty member with the Agricultural Economics Department. During
his career, Walter authored numerous research papers. He also authored and self-published four books of poetry.
Barbara Ann Heid was born February 20, 1939 and grew up on a farm outside Archie, Missouri where she lived with her mother,
Dorothy May Hess and her father, Joseph Henry Hess and six siblings. Barbara graduated from Archie High School in 1957. On July 14,
1957, she married Walter George Heid, Jr. She attended the University of Missouri in Columbia before the couple moved to
Washington, D.C. in 1960. The Heid family moved to Bozeman, Montana in 1967 and Barbara became a frequent volunteer at the
local hospital and a 4-H leader during their time in Bozeman. In 1975, the family moved to St. George, Kansas (Atkinson Funeral
Homes 2023).
Walter and Barbara Heid sold the property to John A. and Idessa V. Tyers on August 22, 1975. Mark Tyers, the son of John and Idessa
Tyers, lived in the residence in 1979 along with his wife, Kathy. In 1982, John and Idessa lived in the house along with Mark Tyers.
From 1989 through at least 2012, John and Idessa lived in the residence.
Kathy Tyers Gillin was born and raised in Long Beach, California. She obtained a degree in microbiology from MSU in Bozeman. She
married Mark Tyers in Bozeman and then returned to school and became certified to teach grades K-12. She taught in a private
school for a time. She began a writing career in 1981, publishing her first novel, Firebird, with Bantam Spectra in 1986. She
subsequently published Fusion Fire, which was a sequel to Firebird in 1988. Subsequent books in the series included Crystal Witness
in 1989 and Shivering World in 1991. During this period, she also authored a nonfiction travel book and, with her husband, released
two CDs of folk music which were named, Leave Her and Johnny and The Very Best Dreams. Kathy played flute and Irish harp on
these albums. In 1991, while working on another speculative fiction novel, she was approached with an opportunity to write a novel
in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Her novel, The Truce at Bakura that was published in 1993, reached the New York Times
bestseller list. She took a sabbatical from writing from 1994 to 1997. She went back to writing, and Bethany House Publishers
published rewritten versions of Firebird and Fusion Fire in 1999 and 2000. During the same period, Tyers was approached for the Star
Wars market again and authored another novel, Balance Point, in addition to short stories for four Star Wars anthologies. Shivering
World was revised and re-released in early 2004. The three Firebird novels were re-released in an annotated version by Marcher Lord
Press in 2011, followed by two additional series novels: Wind and Shadow in 2011 and Daystar in 2012, completing the Firebird Saga.
The Tyers estate sold the property to Mike Kalicak on February 15, 2022. The property was transferred to 314 W. Villard LLC via a quit
claim deed on April 25, 2022. 314 W. Villiard LLC sold the property to Ailesbury 314 LLC on June 28, 2023, and they are the current
owner as of October 2023.

C – Characteristics
YES NO
The structure is a fine example of common, mid-century Ranch house design but does not
represent distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction under
Criterion C.
D – Information YES NO The site is unlikely to yield important information regarding research questions under Criterion
D.
COMMENTS
The property was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects P.C. He recommended the house to be an intrusive
element within a potential historic district and suggested its historic integrity had not been retained due to changes in design and materials.
INTEGRITY (LOCATION, DESIGN, SETTING, MATERIALS, WORKMANSHIP, FEELING, ASSOCIATION)
The site retains its integrity of location as the house does not appear to have been moved from its original location. The site also
retains integrity aspects of design, setting, feeling, and association for its location in a residential neighborhood surrounded by other
mid-century houses, conveyance of typical Ranch house design, and its continued use as a single-family home. The integrity aspect of
materials and workmanship is not retained due to the replacement of vinyl sashed windows and the addition of the enclosed patio.
POSSIBLE IMPACTS TO THE SITE
Demolition and redevelopment of the lot
