Comment on RA 23306 Range 5 Development:the impacts on 4 Daughters Farm and housing
development on prime agriculture and historic farm ground. When my brother and sister-in-law
first purchased the small farm on Stucky Rd close to 15 years ago you could sit on their front
porch and enjoy the front yard because only a handful of cars went by.Today, there are a
handful of cars every minute. The front porch/yard is no longer used and a careful eye is kept on
the dogs.My brother no longer rides his bike into town because it is too dangerous.I have
helped my brother build fences, put up hoop houses, plant, and harvest over the years. The
land was originally a part of MSU Ag department. It is prime agricultural ground with a naturally
high water table and rich soil. For over a decade my brother's twenty acres was the largest
supplier of produce to Bozeman's Farmers Market. The impacts of the Range 5 development to
a small family farm cannot be overstated. For years I have watched Bozeman develop west
from 19th Ave.Putting housing right on top of the best farming ground in the valley. There are
many places around Bozeman better suited for development than west into the valley.Right
now,you can see the stars at night at 4 Daughters Farm. There is minimal light pollution. That
will change with the Range 5 development proposed adjacent to their southern property line.
Their entire viewshed will also be impacted. Not to mention the risk of pollution to their water
and soil from the housing proposed.I have watched countless families enjoy the simple
pleasure of my brother’s place.Small children are thrilled with the pigs, chickens, and picking
raspberries right off the bush.Families are able to make a connection to the land, where their
food comes from, and enjoy the beauty of the hard work a family has put into making it special.
There are mainly places that have recognized special zoning for agricultural land near urban
centers that are off limits to developers. They wisely recognize if you build on your farmland,
your food must come from farther away–making it more expensive and not as fresh.I really
think this latest development is the last straw for my brother’s family farm.A small farm
surrounded by three story apartment complexes just doesn’t have the same appeal as the
dream they had in mind just 15 years ago.
