To whom it may concern at the City of Bozeman:
The NBC Montana News article called it alarming. We are appalled to read
the statistics that came from the studies on the extent of problems in the
urban camping areas in Bozeman.
In just three months, city crews picked up and hauled away:
23.5 tons of waste and hauled it to Logan landfill -- 15 full pickup
loads of trash, costing over $1000
36 5-gallon buckets of human feces plus bottles of urine and needles
In addition, there were eight separate reports of illicit discharge -- sewage
discharged into waterways, rights of way, and oil leaks. The city is paying
the clean- up crews who have to deal with this disgusting situation. The
urban campers are putting unnecessary stress on our overworked police
force; another study reported by NBC said that 7.5% of the 911 calls they
get are related to urban campers.
URBAN CAMPERS ARE AN UNSAFE AND UNSANITARY BLIGHT ON OUR CITY.
WE DO NOT THINK THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED. If the city does allow
them, each camper should be held accountable to meet high standards for
living responsibly and be strictly disciplined when they fail to do so, but
enforcement will also cost the taxpayers more money! Why should we
subsidize such a problem?
