This memo serves as an addendum to the Davis Lane 115-ac Property Gallatin County, Montana Wetland Delineation Report (2023). At the request of the City of Bozeman Wetland Reviewer, two Morrison-Maierle environmental scientists collected additional data points/soil pits in a swale feature within the eastern portion of the subject property. A total of six additional pits were excavated along the swale extent through the property. Figure A depicts the locations of the data points/soil pits. Methodology Because the feature is within a field with the human land-use practice of “Managed Plant Communities”, the following approach was used. The “problematic hydrophytic vegetation” section of the Western Mountains, Valleys, and Coast Region Regional Supplement (2010 Regional Supplement), was used as a procedure to collect data. According to the 2010 Regional Supplement, “The following approaches are recommended if the natural vegetation has been altered through management to such an extent that hydrophytic vegetation determined may be unreliable” Table 1. Approaches to Problematic Hydrophytic Vegetation Analysis. Approach Applicability 1.Examine the vegetation on a nearby, unmanaged reference site having similar soilsand hydrologic conditions. Assume that thesame plant community would exist on the Not applicable. The entire field has altered hydrology via pivot irrigation. Delineated wetlands on the subject property are all fringe wetlands associated with waterways. Turnrow Swale Wetland Investigation 6916 2 | Page managed site, in the absence of human alteration. 2. For recently cleared or tilled areas (not planted or seeded), leave representative areas unmanaged for at least one growing season with normal rainfall and reevaluate the vegetation. Not applicable. The site has been planted and seeded for decades. 3. If management was initiated recently, use offsite data sources such as aerial photography, NWI maps, and interviews with the landowners and other persons familiar with the area to determine what plant community was present on the site before the management occurred. Not applicable. Use of the farm field for cereal crops is not a recently initiated management circumstance. NWI maps do not depict the area as wetland. Aerial photographs do not indicate exclusionary agricultural practices, which often indicate wet conditions. 4. If the unmanaged vegetation condition cannot be determined, make the wetland determination based on indicators of hydric soil and wetland hydrology. Applicable. The other three procedures above are not applicable. Site Description Publicly Available Wetland Data According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service National Wetland Inventory database and the Montana Natural Heritage Program wetlands mapping database, no wetland features are mapped within the targeted investigation area. Streams and Topography The investigation area is gently sloping with elevations between 4,600 feet to 4,630 feet above sea level according to the Bozeman, MT (2024) USGS 7.5 minute topographic map. No streams are depicted within this topographic map within the targeted investigation area. Soils Two mapped soil types identified in the targeted investigation are summarized in the Table below. No mapped hydric soils are located within the targeted investigation area. Table 2. NRCS Mapped Soil Units within the targeted investigation area. Map Unit Symbol Map Unit Name Hydric Soil rating 50B Blackdog silt loam, 0 to 4 percent slopes 0 748 Hyalite-Beaverton complex, 0 to 4 percent slopes 0 Turnrow Swale Wetland Investigation 6916 3 | Page Information from the Farmer The following information was received from the current farmer of the subject property, Brenton Bos: The field is currently planted in malt barley via a drilled seed method; light tillage can be done on the property that would range from harrowing or dowel plowing 3” deep. There are no “wet spots” in the field that are avoided during planting. The field is surface irrigated approximately 15-20 days over the growing season from May 1 through October 15. Collected Groundwater Data Allied Engineering monitored groundwater through “peak” season (May through August) on the subject property. A map depicting monitoring well locations is attached to this memo. Table 3: Turnrow EG to Ground Water (ft). When detected, groundwater was generally 6-7 feet below the ground surface throughout the monitoring period, which coincided with the primary growing season of the region. Anerobic conditions during the growing season are required to meet the definition of hydric and wetland soils (USDA 2017). Turnrow Swale Wetland Investigation 6916 4 | Page Wetland Indicators Vegetation Vegetation at upland and wetland data points is classified based on wetland indicator status. In this case, the vegetation is managed and cannot be considered in the evaluation of wetland conditions (refer to Table 1, Approach 4). The field is currently planted with malted barley (Hordeum vulgare). Malted barley does not have an indicator status assigned in the 2020 National Wetland Plant List version 3.5. Malted barley was growing robustly across most of the targeted investigation area. Soil A total of six additional soils pits were dug within the targeted investigation area and are summarized in Table 4. Hydric soil indicators were not observed within any of the test pits. Soils exhibit Mollic epipedon characteristics common in agricultural fields in the Gallatin Valley. Soil colors are dark at 10YR 2/2, 10YR 2/1, 10YR 3/2, and 10YR3/3 with loamy textures from 0 to 16 or 0 to 19 inches. As indicated by the farmer, the plow zone is 3 inches. Soils exhibited compaction in variable layers and gravels near 16 inches. Hydrology Hydrology within the targeted investigation area is influenced by pivot irrigation. Standing water was observed within low areas of the pivot tracks within the targeted investigation area. Pivot tracks are compacted areas of soil and compressed plants creating a place where applied water can pool. When soil pits were excavated within ponded areas of pivot tracks, saturated soils were observed within the first 4 inches of the pit and then dry below. This indicates that the ponded water was due to the recent application of irrigation water and not groundwater connection. The targeted investigation area is a gently sloping swale feature within the greater landscape. Therefore, the entire investigation area qualified for Geomorphic Position (D2). Some, but not all, of the targeted investigation area also displayed Drainage Patterns (B10) due to the depressed landscape position and irrigation sprinklers. Both of these indicators are secondary hydrology indicators. Additionally, some areas within the targeted investigation area displayed hydrologic indicator (B6) Surface Soil Cracks. USACE’s Wetland Delineation Manual (1987) states that surface soil cracks are often seen in recent fine sediments and in concave landscape positions where water has ponded long enough to destroy surface soil structure, such as depressions, lake fringes, and floodplains. The guidance cautions the user that soil cracks may also appear in temporary ponds and puddles in non-wetlands. This is likely the case due to irrigation practices on the property causing ponding of water. In summary, the entire project area qualifies for Geomorphic Position (D2) which is a secondary hydrology indicator. It is likely that the portions of the investigation area that displayed Drainage patterns (B10) and Surface Soil Cracks (B6) are influenced by introduced irrigation practices. Turnrow Swale Wetland Investigation 6916 5 | Page Summary The hydrology and soil characteristics at each of six additional data points were documented in the field and recorded on USACE Wetland Determination Data Forms for the Western Mountains, Valleys, and Coast (USACE 2022). See Table 4 for a summary of collected data. The data forms are attached to this memo. Table 4: Field Data Summary.
