Office of Government RelationsNewsletter
Greetings,
Before we share this month’s news, we want to take a moment to recognize the
communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. In coordination with FEMA and our state and
local partners, AmeriCorps is mobilizing to assist in recovery and rebuilding efforts in
hard-hit communities across the Southeast. Our thoughts go out to those impacted during
this difficult time.
September concluded AmeriCorps’ yearlong 30th anniversary celebration highlighting
how national service has been – and continues to be – a movement that brings out the
best in America. Thank you to all elected officials who joined us all year long in honoring
this milestone, and we look forward to another 30 years and beyond!
We also extend our gratitude to those who joined in meal packs and other service projects
in commemoration of September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Here
in DC, elected officials helped pack 450,000 meals alongside community members for
those in need.
Read on to learn more about our upcoming Hispanic Heritage Month events, exciting
launches of the One Utah Service Fellowship and the Environmental Justice Climate
Corps, engagement in the annual Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute conferences, our Recovery Coaching Program,
and AmeriCorps member exit surveys.
As always, thank you for uplifting the crucial work of AmeriCorps; your support helps get
things done for Americans across the nation!

Hurricane Helene: AmeriCorps DisasterResponse
“Whenever natural disasters strike, AmeriCorps members and volunteers show up with
courage and unwavering commitment to help their neighbors recover, rebuild and
heal,” said Michael D. Smith, CEO, AmeriCorps. “We will continue to work alongside our
federal partners, national service counterparts, and state and local partners to aid those
affected by Hurricane Helene."
Since Hurricane Helene made landfall on Thursday, Sep. 26, AmeriCorps has deployed
more than 100 AmeriCorps members serving with AmeriCorps NCCC and FEMA Corps to
impacted states including Florida, Virginia, and South Carolina. AmeriCorps is
coordinating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, other federal partners,
and the American Red Cross, among others to assess and begin recovery efforts.
Additional teams are being activated to impacted states, including to North Carolina and
Georgia, to provide disaster survivor assistance.
9/11 Day of Service
911 Day of Service
On September 11, AmeriCorps partnered with 9/11 Day for another impactful 9/11 Day of
Service and Remembrance across the country. In 21 cities, elected leaders and more
than 30,000 volunteers packed more than 8.6 million meals to be distributed to local food
banks. From packing meals to cleaning cemeteries, tens of thousands of Americans
nationwide answered the call to come together in unity through service to honor the lives
lost.
Join us to Celebrate Hispanic HeritageMonth!
During Hispanic Heritage Month, AmeriCorps is highlighting the positive impact Hispanic
and Latino Americans have made in their communities through AmeriCorps. Every day,
AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers from Hispanic and Latino
communities are supporting their communities on a wide range of issues, including
significantly contributing to the fight against hunger across the United States. This year, to
emphasize our commitment to improving food security, we are partnering with The Baylor
Collaborative on Hunger & Poverty and Mujeres de Islas for two virtual Hispanic Heritage
Month events:
Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. ET - Beyond the Table – The Fight for Food Justice

Program Spotlight: Recovery CoachingPrograms
AmeriCorps recently released an Evaluation of AmeriCorps-Supported Recovery
Coaching Programs, which includes 11 AmeriCorps-supported organizations serving
individuals in recovery from substance abuse. AmeriCorps and its members are dedicated
to securing healthy futures for all Americans through supporting programs addressing the
opioid crisis. Organizations like the Healing Action Network in St. Louis are providing
preventative mental health services through case management, opioid education,
therapeutic counseling, peer support, and community education. AmeriCorps members
serving in Recovery Corps focus on helping teens and adults achieve their goals of
recovery.
