Read-Only Content Full Name Heather Myers Email hjmyers27@gmail.com Phone Comments As we all know, we are in the midst of a housing crisis in Bozeman. This has caused a dramatic increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness in our community. People are camping in public places because it's their best, or only, option. Although the recent supreme court decision makes it legal for cities to criminalize homelessness, doing so is unethical. Bozeman's current ordinances provide adequate limitations on camping. Ordinance 2172 would add red tape, restrictions and unnecessarily criminalize folks already in tough situations. In particular, I worry that restricting camping in public places will decrease people's access to the limited shelter they have and result in more injuries due to exposure to cold. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, an average of 700 people experiencing housing insecurity die of hypothermia a year. Please do the right thing and prioritize solutions and support, not restrictions on survival.
