Dear Mayor and Commissioners:
I write in support of the campaign to ban ALL trapping and snaring of animals in the
Sourdough Canyon. Your constituents, visitors and tourists often hike with their dogs and
children year-round in this canyon. Rather than relaxing and enjoying the scenery, they
constantly worry that dogs and children (nay, even adults) will be caught in a trap while in the
forest and on area trails. Trapping has NO place in a more humane and modern society, and
especially not on a high-use recreation trail like Sourdough.
I found my dog and myself in a related situation on a Montana trail where trapping was
allowed. My beloved dog tripped a trap set very near the trail. Being young at the time, his
quick responses allowed him to jump very quickly and high and miraculously he was not
caught in the trap. If he had been caught, he surely would have lost his leg. Additionally,
had this happened when he was an older dog, he would not likely have escaped the cruel
jaws of the trap.
Countless wildlife utilizes this Sourdough migration corridor in the Gallatin Range, including
endangered species also at great risk! These are public lands that should be enjoyed without
fear of consequences such as grave, maiming injury or even a painful death. I would be
grateful if you would consider a city proclamation that would benefit the majority and BAN
TRAPPING in this beautiful drainage.
Thank you,
Tricia
