Dear Bozeman Commission,
I’m sending this email to ask that you do not ban trapping in the Sourdough drainage. Here
are a few reasons why:
1. There isn’t substantial conflict
2. FWP and state statues provide the setback regulation for trapping.
3. This is public land, to cut a use would be like stating no dogs in the area, this would be
more viable and would lead to less dog conflict as well as waste and disease issue
brought in by domestic dogs.
4. The main stake in this is using pets and emotions and no science. If we don’t allow
trapping, mostly in this area would be considered varmint animals, skunks etc., we
would be providing an environment for disease transmission such as rabies.
5. Private pet owners have responsibilities as well, to control their animal. Many conflicts
arise for dog to dog and dog to human, as we have seen of late. An owner’s inability to
control their animal is not on other users of public land, but on them.
6. Any trap, or statistic that footloose might bring, you need to consider the legal set traps
for illegal set traps. Many of the stories told from this group are emotional and baseless.
7. Cutting public use to the public may lead to unintended consequences to the city of
Bozeman as well as this commission, costing taxpayer dollars.
I appreciate your consideration in this matter.
Respectfully,
Kris Killorn, President
