Dear Bozeman Commission,
I am sending this email to voice my opposition to a ban on trapping in the Sourdough
drainage.
There are already setbacks in place in this area. The setbacks are in place for human and
canine safety. Montana K9 Safety has been providing educational clinics on how to
avoid/ release pets from traps. More clinics can be scheduled for the Bozeman area.
The USDA Forest Service website for Custer Gallatin National Forest states:
In many Wilderness Area, developed campgrounds, picnic areas and day use areas, dogs are
required to be on a leash. Most other areas within the National Forest do not require your
dog
to be on a leash, but they should be under your control at all times. We recommend that
you
Keep your dog on a leash when you are around other forest users, other dogs, or are in
bear
country.
The USDA Forest Service website for Custer Gallatin National Forest further states:
The Custer Gallatin National Forest is home to both black and grizzly bears, and provides
Important habitat for bears and other wildlife to use throughout the year.
So the Forest Service is recommending your dog be leashed at all times in the Custer
Gallatin
Forest but requiring your dog to be under your control at all times and be leashed in certain
areas.
Statistically, you are more likely to die in a car accident in Montana than have your dog
caught
In a trap. If your dog is caught in a trap there is an above 90% chance your dog will sustain
zero injuries. Also, in nearly all fatal instances, and in all instances where serious injuries
were sustained but were not fatal, the dog was at large and not within visible/verbal
distance
of the owner.
I appreciate your time and consideration in this matter.
Respectfully
Jeff Morace
