September 9, 2024 Greetings, Bozeman City Commission, I attempted to submit comments on your web page under Public Comments, but was not sure if the submission actually went through. So, I am offering them again via email to make sure you receive them. These comments are in support of the Bozeman City Commission's resolution to ban trapping in the Sourdough watershed. Footloose Montana is to be commended for their efforts. In 2022, they secured a grant to fund a thorough analysis of the situation by Mike Bader, Independent Natural Resources Consultant. He validated that this area is completely unsuitable to allow the dangers of trapping due to the high numbers of people recreating with companion animals. Trapping for some species including coyotes is allowed year round. Other types of traps and snares are allowed for the first 4 miles with a minimal setback of only 50 feet. Mike Bader's report was submitted by Footloose Montana's Executive Director, Jessica Karjala. Traps also maim and kill non target species (bycatch) including fragile and endangered species. Please pass this resolution and support any other efforts to keep animals, domestic and wildlife, safe in the Sourdough Canyon and watershed. Thank you for your consideration.
