Dear Bozeman Commission, I’m sending this email to ask that you do not ban trapping in the Sourdough drainage. As best as I can tell, this is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. There are already setbacks in place in this area, and it isn’t known for high volume of trapping to begin with. One only has to look at California to realize taking away any form of wild game management can have unintended consequences in the long run. Montana K9 Safety, with some input from the Montana Trapper’s Association, has been providing an excellent public outreach regarding educational clinics on how to avoid and/or release pets from traps. If you’d like, I’d be happy to ensure more classes are done in the Bozeman area. Statistically speaking, you have a better chance of being in a fatal car accident in this state than you do having your pet caught in a trap. Even then, there is an above 90% chance your dog will sustain zero injuries. It’s worth noting nearly all fatal instances, and all instances where serious injuries were sustained but weren’t fatal, were due to the fact an animal was at large and not within visible/verbal distance of the owner. I appreciate your consideration in this matter. I believe the footloose Montana group is not being truthful of their truemotives. They are using dogs as a tool to push trapping bans in general. Additionally, all recreation groups should berepresented and heard. Additional rules and regulations in regards to setbacks, equipment, and practices have beenset in place which trappers have adopted. If you look, there has been little to no conflicts with dogs and therefore thefootloose Montana group has a bigger agenda of getting trapping banned altogether. Please consider ALLrecreationists when you make a ruling on this bill and not discriminating against law abiding recreationists such asthe trappers. However, I would like to draw attention to some excerpts from Mike Bader in regards to this proposal: "Another concern is the potential attention this new resolution may draw from pro- trapping groups. Amending the existing code would likely have been less high profile, less noticeable, whereas drafting an entirely new ordinance could well alert the trappers to the city's actions to ban trapping. They could perceive it as a provocation resulting in lobbying the Montana legislature to preempt the city's authority by passing legislation to allow trapping on city land throughout the state. We hope this is not the case. Ultimately, we are very pleased this resolution is moving forward and grateful to the City Commission for working with us the past few years to address the danger of trapping on city-owned land in the Sourdough watershed! Join us in our fight to ban trapping in the city owned portions of the Sourdough watershed by submitting testimony and celebrating when it passes! Thank you to all of our supporters who have been helping us in this fight! We hope to see you at the Commission meeting Tuesday night!" It seems like the mission of this vote is to have it fly under the radar of recreationists, trappers, and city residents without receiving proper comments from City residents. Additionally footloose Montana aims to change verbiage to ban trapping as to not "alert the trappers to the citys actions to ban trapping." Furthermore, it seems like the city commission has been in cahoots with Footloose Montana to ban trapping and isnot working with trappers or FWP to resolve the issue on both sides. Wouldn't the city commissions vote be a conflict of interest and an already forgone conclusion with how they will vote since the City Commission has "been working with Footloose Montana"?? Based on this passage, I dont believe the city commission is restoring faith in the community by only working with one side of the issue. This verbiage is very alarming and points at the corruption the City Commission continues to participate in. Chase Anders 1543 Ryun Sun Way Bozeman, MT 59718
