Dear Commissioners,
I participated in gathering signatures for the Single Use Plastic Petition. I interacted with
pedestrians on Main Street, at Sweet Pea and at local parks. The response from the public
was overwhelmingly positive; so many signed right away or shared that they had already
signed. They majority went out of their way to show gratitude that I was helping to forward
this petition. The visitors from out of town, mostly from out of state, were surprised that
Bozeman didn't have something already in place to limit single use plastic as their state had
enacted similar legislation years ago.
In a state that takes such pride in its wild spaces, it's imperative that we protect it from
damage. During freeway clean up this spring, I spent hours on the side of I90 collecting trash.
Most of it was plastic, too many single-use plastic bags to count. How devastating! And yet,
a simple solution exists, encouraging citizens to bring reusable bags or use paper.
Please consider putting the Single Use Plastic on the ballot in November so that the citizens of
Bozeman can vote on this topic.
Thanks for your time,
Elizabeth Hanson
