The Bozeman City Commission meeting on Tuesday, August 6th, was a display of double standards that the city commissioners use for law-abiding taxpayers whom thecommissioners designated as "white oppressors living on the stolen land" and for Joey Morrison's friends from Tenants United, who, despite also being white and living on thesame land, were given a status of being "oppressed." With complete approval from the deputy mayor and commissioners, Mayor Terry Cunningham stopped people in the middle of the sentence and prohibited the public fromnondisturbing cheerful clapping only because the city commissioners didn't like the speaker's arguments. Yet, they did nothing to prevent Bozeman Tenants United's pre-planned meeting disruption and violation of pretty much all regulations listed in the city ordinance 2157, Sec.2.02.12 Subsection E. This double standard is particularly concerning due to Joey Morrison's ties with TenantsUnited activists. While these connections may or may not lead to a conflict of interest case, they undeniably make him personally accountable for the chaos he allowed to unfold. This meeting was not the first time the city commissioners treated Bozeman taxpayers whose views they didn't like as second-class citizens whose opinions didn't matter, but it was the first time the deputy mayor openly allied with a radical group against the taxpayers who pay their money to keep the city functioning. It's not enough for the mayor Cunningham to say that " he was disappointed by the behavior." He, the deputy mayor, and city commissioners must openly condemn it as unacceptable, apologize to the other attendees for violating their right to free speech, and revise city ordinance 2157 to remove unreasonable regulations and replace them with clear rules prohibiting violence and disturbance but respecting public rights to individual dignity.
