Criminalization of houselessness does not solve the problem. Increasing punitive measures against those
experiencing financial hardship only worsens the problem. A large majority of "campers" are working people in
Bozeman: Construction workers building our housing, grocery store employees, restaurant workers, vital members
of our community. Fines disproportionately punish folks of lower economic status- for those living paycheck to
paycheck, fines can be devastating & exacerbates financial instability making it harder for them to find permanent
housing. Civil punishment results in Court Dates, Court Fees, etc. For folks that are working full time to provide for
themselves & their families, Court Dates can be a major obstacle. (Lack of access to transportation, missing shifts,
etc). Missing Court results in warrants, court fees, etc- all which cause people to be labeled criminals& only continue
to add obstacles to gaining financial stability & permanent housing.
