Hello Commissioners,
I am writing to you today as we prepare to review Ordinance 2147, with regards to urban
camping regulations.
I am concerned that changing the ordinance as it currently stands will lead to stricter
penalties for those experiencing homelessness. We know that criminalization of our
houseless neighbors does not solve the housing crisis, and increasing punitive measures
on those already experiencing financial hardship and housing insecurity further perpetuates
their housing instability. Stricter penalties also require unnecessary bureaucracy and
oversight. Personally, I don’t want to see more tax dollars go towards the policing of my
houseless neighbors in the name of public safety. I would like to see those funds channeled
to long-term, real housing solutions, like an affordable housing overlay, especially valuable
as we revisit the unified development code, or investments into social housing, in alignment
with the Montgomery County, Maryland model.
Now is the time to invest in long-term solutions that address the root causes of
homelessness. With recent news that Montana is expected to close the housing voucher
waitlist, leaving thousands more at risk for becoming homeless, we must invest in these
solutions that will house our neighbors for decades to come.
Thank you for reading,
Amaia Sangroniz
