Dear Mayor Cunningham, Deputy Mayor Morrison, Commissioners Madgic, Fischer, andBode, and fellow city officials and advisory boards: Transportation Director Ross,
Transportation Advisory Board (TAB), Park and Recreation Director Overton, and UrbanParks and Forestry Advisory Board (UPF):
As you embark on the Fowler Avenue Connection (FAC) Project work session, we encourage
you to take the time to understand the ecological value of the native tree-lined ditch corridor. To help you prepare, we compiled a short list (2 pages) of references to scientific articles,
book chapters, guidelines and best management practices.
We are heartened to learn that the Transportation Department is exploring a collaboration withMSU’s Western Transportation Institute Road Ecology Department on this project. This is a
step in the right direction to becoming better stewards of the natural resources we still have inand around Bozeman.
Thank you, in advance, for your thoughtful considerations on how to minimize, to the greatest
extent, impacts from building the road, shared use path, and sidewalk in this currentlyundeveloped, ecologically valuable parcel.
Additionally, please also be thinking of Branch Out Bozeman's (BOB) goal of EXPANDING
Bozeman’s tree canopy. Any removal of established mature trees is a step backwards from thisgoal. Please familiarize yourselves with the BOB initiative and how costly it can get to plant
trees for a mere 3% increase in canopy cover. Planting trees is great. Keeping trees standing iseven better. In the paraphrased words of BOB consultant “Trees are the only infrastructure
that appreciate over time."
Sincerely, members of the Bozeman Tree Coalition
