I previously sent this to the agenda email, but was missing the actual letter. So, here are both
attachments I meant to include and I've sent this to both agenda and comments emails.
Thank you!Jesse Therienjesse@ytcleancities.org406.570.0770
Good Evening,
My name is Jesse Therien and I live here in Bozeman. As you are all likely aware, there is,yet
again,a push to limit single use plastic bags in Bozeman. This is really just a small part of the
overall ubiquitous plastic issue and pollution we live with globally. However,I think every bit
helps. This year,as I began helping with some lawn care,I realized the massive amount of
plastic being deposited everywhere everyday from trimmers.I tried to find a biodegradable
version or a non-plastic version, which proved to be quite difficult. While I’ve found some in
Europe,I only find discontinued versions available here in the US.
As an example, here is BioTrim (Currently Unavailable).
Then there’s SustainaLine (out of Florida):https://weedrecede.com/sustainaline/
weedrecede.com and RecedeBioPlastics.com for other products.
I just spoke with the owner/inventor of SustainaLine,Bob Hawkinson, and he said they’re very
close to viable products including landscape flags, mulch bags, trimmer line, plant tags, planter
pots.He informed me,and you an see on his website, that a single trimmer produces:
11,000 microplastics/minute
1.3 billions nano plastics/minute
All this to say, there are options and things coming in the near future and we should be aware
and ready to try these new,non-plastic,technologies as soon as possible rather than waiting for
“public feedback”and “seeing how things work before trying them”.
