Dear Esteemed Deputy Mayor:
I recently wrote a letter to the mayor (enclosed) expressing my concerns about
the ongoing high density housing development that I feel is very ugly. Most concerning
to me is that it is irreversible and may be an unnecessary degradation of our
environment. jiilce you will be inaycr quite soon i wanted to also express my
sentiments to you.
I just read an interview with you (High Country News) in which you identified two
issues that I believe are key to understanding why the government is not responsive to
the public: partisan politics and lack of engagement by politicians in the community. The
intense political polarization allows politicians to focus on a set of inflammatory topics
while dismissing issues that are deeply affecting people. The relatively recent invasion
of high density housing into our community is an issue that I think would elevate
community involvement above partisan politics and initiate meaningful engagement of
local politicians in the community.
The invasion of high density housing is admittedly not as important as global
warming or violation of human rights (or many other issues) but I think it is linked to a
bigger picture which is: lowering of our standards to satisfy greed. Throughout my life I
have seen this happen in my country. One significant ongoing struggle is the
degradation of health care which cannot be rationally addressed at the highest levels of
government due to political polarization and influence of big money.
What I just expressed to you is laden with opinion. So please read my letter to
the mayor which is more reasoned. However, I think that we are actually in the process
of permanently disfiguring our beautiful city (and surroundings), and that, in the end, it
is driven by money interests rather than people interests; and furthermore, I think most
of the public would want to put the brakes on this development until a set of reasonable
alternatives are presented and discussed.
Sincerely
f
