Dear Bozeman City Commission,
As someone who lives on the West side of Bozeman, and has frequently biked and walked the
gravel path that runs through the Fowler Avenue Corridor and neighborhoods, I have beendeeply concerned about the impact that widening and extending the road and destroying the
many trees along that route will have on our community, the neighborhoods, and theecosystem around the ditch/stream that runs through this area.
I agree with and quote the below ideas that I've just become aware of, which seem to offer a
more sensible approach for preserving the ecosystem in this part of town than the plan tooverdevelop the road through the Fowler Corridor. I urge you to slow your process and
seriously consider these ideas:
1. Follow the template that already exists between Durston and the gravel trail that leads to Babcock:
a) Two Lanes (no median; except where it could save trees)
b) One paved shared use path on West side for cyclists & pedestrians
c) Sidewalk on the East Side using existing width boulevards
2. One shared use path only necessitates one crossing for bike/ped at Babcock & Fowler which:
a) adds value to the existing crosswalk for neighbors
b) flashing light activated by pedestrians/cyclists (like path to the M)
c) increases safety
d) saves money
3. Minimized road width helps preserve adequate buffer for trees & waterway:
a) canopy root ends need to be 30 ft. min. from edge of construction
b) PLIU zoning designation preserves trees for park or natural area
c) abide by SLPP 200 ft. buffer for ditches
4. To make sure this project proceeds thoughtfully, it needs ecology experts on the design team going
forward:
a) Connect the Parks Department
b) Connect Sustainability Citizen Advisory Board members
c) Connect all those engaged with the Bozeman Climate Pl
I urge the City Commission to not approve the current design under consideration at your June 19 commission
meeting. Widening the road and destroying trees and the ecosystem that runs through these neighborhoods will not
improve the quality of life for those of us who live on the West side of town. Please slow your process and find a
better solution that prioritizes the peace and quiet of the neighborhoods in this area. We don't need another wide
road in this part of town--we do need walkable and bikeable places that preserve the few natural areas left on the
West side of town.
Sincerely,
Rilla Esbjornson
