Proposed setbacks on alley.docx Thank you, City Of Bozeman This is an automated message generated by Granicus. Please do not reply directly to this email. Dear Mayor Cunningham, Deputy Mayor Morrison, Commissioners Madgic, Fischer and Bode, I am writing to express my deep concerns about the proposed reduction of alley or backyard setbacks from 10-15 feet reduce to a mere 6 feet. This change is another blow to creating a livable and sustainable city. Among the negative effects of this misguided attempt at increasing density, which primarily benefits developers rather than enhancing our quality of life, is a significant loss of tree canopy. A large portion of our tree canopy exists on single-family lots, and the majority of mature trees are located in backyards. We need those trees to be healthy and protect greenspace. Additionally, the proposed changes would result in increased lot coverage by buildings and a reduction in the allowable lot sizes for backyard cottages. This effort to cater to developers' preference for size over quality will result in much less privacy for those living in buildings near the alley. There will be constant noise from cars and trucks traveling down the alley, interfering with the quiet enjoyment of one's home, which is protected by municipal code. This interference is unhealthy and affects not only the ground floor, but all occupants of houses or ADUs with only a six-foot setback from alley traffic. Furthermore, the proposed changes create serious safety concerns, which are a paramount responsibility of governance. These include access for EMTs, police, and fire department vehicles and personnel in emergency situations. I urge you to reject these changes and prioritize the well-being and safety of our community over the interests of developers. Thank you, Elizabeth Darrow Bozeman
