Subject: City Commission Meeting, Tue, Jun 11, 2024, 6pm, City Hall. Request to moveConsent Item G.4 to the Action Item agenda.
I am writing to ask the City Commission to move Consent Item G.4 to the Action Item
agenda for the Jun 11, 2024, City Commission meeting. Consent Item G.4 is to "Authorizethe Interim City Manager to sign a PSA with Affion Public for executive recruitment services
for the position of Community Development Director."
I note that Consent Item G.4 appears to be the City of Bozeman's (City) initial publicannouncement of a nationwide search for a new Director of Community Development—one
of the most powerful positions in the City. As such, I think this announcement deserves tobe on the Action Item agenda so that:
(1) The Commission can explain to the public how the process will work;
(2) Each Commissioner can offer initial comments about the process; and(3) The public can offer initial comments about the process and about the professional
qualifications the public would like to see in a new Director of Community Development(DCD).
For example: Arguably, the City needs a new DCD who will embrace the City's four core
values of positive leadership, integrity, service, and teamwork. Moreover, a new DCDshould be willing to act to maintain Bozeman's historical character and sense of place so
that Bozeman can remain the most livable place for all. As such, a new DCD will—at aminimum—need to be well-versed in urban ecology, urban forestry, and water
conservation; historical preservation and neighborhood-friendly development;environmental sustainability (including green power) and climate resilience; and affordable
rental housing that, e.g., is based on 60% or less of Gallatin County's or City of Bozeman'sArea Median Income (AMI).
Thank you for considering my request to move Consent Item G.4 to the Action Item Agenda
for the Jun 11, 2024, City Commission meeting.
