Subject: Historic Preservation Award in Landscape Stewardship (May 30, 2024)
On behalf of the Bozeman Tree Coalition (BTC), I am writing to thank the City ofBozeman’s Historic Preservation Advisory Board (HPB) for awarding the 2024 Historic
Preservation Award (HPA) in Landscape Stewardship to the BTC.
As the BTC, we were honored and humbled by the award because it recognizes our andthe Bozeman community’s ongoing efforts to save the ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa,
the Montana state tree) at the corner of N. 5th Avenue and Main Street. Moreover, theaward acknowledges BTC’s larger mission, which is to advocate for Bozeman’s urban
forest—its ecological function and the ecosystem services it provides to the community as awhole.
At the May 30 HPA ceremony, I enjoyed learning more about the HPB's history, current
focus, and the different HPA categories. Especially heartwarming was listening to thehistoric preservation stories of the other HPA recipients. Clearly, all of the organizations
and people who received HPAs on May 30 care deeply about Bozeman's historicalcharacter and sense of place—not only with respect to Bozeman's built environment but
also with respect to Bozeman’s natural environment.
Thank you again for awarding the 2024 HPA in Landscape Stewardship to the BTC. Wetruly believe housing and trees can coexist.
Sincerely,
Daniel Carty, Bozeman Tree Coalition213 N. 3rd Ave
