Hello Mayor Cunningham, Mayor elect Morrison and Bozeman City Commissioners,
I am writing in regard to your decision this week, June 4, to appointment a replacement City Commissioner to ChrisCobern.
Reading the eleven candidates’ statements of interest and qualifications, it is evident we have a pool of engaged, qualified citizens who are willing to do the hard work required of our city commission.
One candidate stands out due to her engagement around policy impacts to neighborhoods: Emily Talago.
When I met her, Emily was taking the lead to successfully implement our Midtown Neighborhood Association. Shehas served well on the Midtown Urban Renewal and our Interneighborhood Council citizen advisory boards. Theseare crucial areas of experience for our next commissioner to be effective.
Emily is a careful and thoughtful listener. She asks questions. Emily is willing to take time to have conversationsthat delve into the whys of other people’s points of view. I have seen her directly ask for responses to criticalquestions while keeping the tone of the conversations curious and respectful.
I’d ask that you take a look at what experiential aspects are needed to broaden and deepen city commission publicengagement. Emily represents a demographic that includes north side Bozeman and younger people who work forlocal businesses at “regular” jobs. It’s important to have city commissioners who can bring perspectives from theirday to day interactions to connect with other Bozeman citizens on the key issues facing us including housing costs, jobs, loss of older affordable housing options to gentrification, social equity and environmental justice.
Thank you for the work you do for us. Thank you for considering and appointing Emily Talago as our citycommissioner. She will do a great job for us all!
Sincerely,Karen Sanchez424 North 5th Ave
