RE: City Commission Appointment: Alison Sweeny
DATE: June 1, 2024
Dear Mayor Cunningham, Deputy Mayor Morrison, Commissioner Madgic, and
Commissioner Fischer,
I sincerely hope that the City Commission will appoint Alison Sweeny for the vacant
City Commissioner position. Alison is the most qualified, dedicated, and informed
candidate, and I have complete confidence that she will serve with great distinction. She is a conscientious and highly intelligent member of our community, and her
presence on the Commission will greatly enhance confidence in city governance at
this crucial juncture in Bozeman's future.
Alison, a 5th generation member of this community, has a deep knowledge and
experience in her hometown, coupled with a remarkable record of local activism in
recent years. Her leadership and membership in multiple local organizations
demonstrate her commitment to finding real solutions through thoughtful policyresearch and outreach to stakeholders. The challenge of "affordable housing"
requires addressing this national crisis without unregulated development or
undermining long-time homeowners. One size does not fit all.
Yes, Bozeman's success, beauty, and livability are at risk due to growing inequities.
However, Aliso represents thousands of residents who seek development solutions
that protect our natural environment and historic neighborhoods while encouraging
middle housing, not luxury condos and houses. Many Bozeman and Gallatin Countyresidents feel left out of the decision-making process, and Alison's appointment would
address this concern.
Alison has organized her Neighborhood Association and attended every INC meetingsince its inception, increasing access to participatory democracy. She frequently
attends City Commission meetings, Historic Preservation Advisory Boards, and
Community Development meetings, often being one of the few public participants.
Her co-founding of The Better Bozeman Coalition (BBC) highlights her commitment toadvocating for neighborhood-friendly changes in the proposed UDC update. The
BBC's approach is research-based and cooperative, advocating changes based on
successful precedents in other communities.
Alison Sweeny embodies the qualities and dedication needed to balance private
property rights, honor our history, and promote the broader community good. Her
appointment would be a significant step towards inclusive and effective governance in
Bozeman.
Thank you for considering Alison Sweeny for the City Commissioner position.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Darrow & Jim Walseth
