Dear City Commission,
I am writing to strongly encourage the appointment of either Emily Talago or Alison Sweeneyto the vacant commission seat. Due to factors beyond our control, diverse representation on
the city commission has significantly diminished. We have lost crucial leadership necessary toequitably serve and represent the diverse gender, race, and class groups within our community.
Therefore, it is essential to fill the vacant seat with someone who can aptly represent anunderrepresented demographic, thereby giving voice to the diversity of our community.
Emily Talago
Emily Talago would be an invaluable addition to the commission for several reasons:
1. Expertise: Emily possesses in-depth knowledge of city processes, ordinances, andmechanisms, which would streamline her onboarding and enable her to contribute
effectively from day one.
2. Representation: As the president of the Midtown Neighborhood Association, Emily
represents the north side of Bozeman—a rapidly growing area that requiresrepresentation from someone who understands its unique challenges and opportunities.
Her insights and practical approach to issues are both balanced and informative.
3. Community Commitment: Emily’s dedication to the community is evident in her
actions. She has been renting rooms in her house at below-market rates for over adecade and has transformed her garden into an urban permaculture haven, showcasing
her expertise in horticulture, food security and sustainability.
Alison Sweeney
Alison Sweeney is another exceptional candidate for the commission:
1. Preservation and Growth: Alison is a leader in the grassroots movement to preserve
Bozeman’s history while promoting sympathetic and practical infill. She is committedto mindful stewardship of growth in our community.
2. Dedication: Alison is prepared to work full-time as a commissioner, addressing thepressing needs of the community with passion and dedication.
3. Collaboration: Despite her strong convictions, Alison is known for her kindness andopenness to collaboration and new ideas. Her passion for Bozeman is unmatched, and
her local roots provide invaluable insight into our community’s needs.
4. Local Representation: Alison would be the only commissioner originally from
Bozeman, bringing an irreplaceable sense of place and continuity to the commission.
Both Emily Talago and Alison Sweeney represent Bozeman’s foundational values and large
demographics within our community. Choosing either candidate would ensure that thecommission benefits from their unique perspectives, dedication, and commitment to our city.
Thank you for considering my recommendations.
Kind regards,
Noah ten Broek
