Mayor Cunningham and members of the Commission:
I am writing to enthusiastically endorse Alison Sweeney for the vacant Commission seat.
I have become acquainted with Alison over the last 9 months and am completely impressed
with her commitment to the community. Alison was born and raised in Bozeman and has a
broad and deep understanding of all the challenging issues facing Bozeman today.
Alison took a leadership role with the Better Bozeman Coalition, an organization that is
dedicated to assisting in the identification of policies that increase the availability of
accessible housing while preserving the character of existing neighborhoods. Although
attempts have been made to marginalize this organization, Alison’s testimony before the
Commission and various boards has consistently demonstrated the inclusiveness of her
objectives. She always presents approaches that aren’t just opposition to policies but offer
possible solutions which address the range of concerns under consideration.
During the last Commission appointment, Mayor Cunningham stated that he wanted “a
uniter, not a divider”. Contrast Alison’s guest editorial in today’s Chronicle (May 24th) with
the recent guest editorial by the Commission’s appointee to the Community Development
Board. Alison has researched approaches elsewhere that hold promise for addressing our
housing crisis and enhance the quality of life in the community without unnecessary
detrimental effects. Your recent CDB appointee resorts to demonizing and name calling
those with differing viewpoints. Alison is the uniter you seek and her appointment would be
a giant step in the effort to regain the trust of the community.
I always want to thank you for the hard work you are willing to take on for the benefit of all
of us. I think you have a chance here, as you did with your recent Commission
appointment, to demonstrate your commitment to comprehensive solutions and
responsiveness to expressed community concerns.
Thank you.
